Depth lacking behind O’Neal

“I haven’t really committed a foul on my man yet”

The Heat spent the first quarter of the season hiding the reality that it lacked an everyday backup power forward.

Starter Udonis Haslem took care of that by averaging nearly 38 minutes a game.

But with Alonzo Mourning sidelined for the season following Thursday’s knee surgery, the Heat doesn’t have the same option at center.

Especially with starter Shaquille O’Neal unable to keep himself on the court.

O’Neal not only has fouled out of the past four games - the longest such streak of his career - but has five disqualifications in the first 26 games this season. Read more

Boone’s next test is huge

“But I think he had a pretty good game otherwise (24 points, 13 rebounds in a Houston win). Hopefully it will be a little bit better against Shaq.”

“If I’m taking 20 shots a game, and I’m only making two, then you can say my production is going down, but I’m still shooting 60 or 65 percent from the field. So they’ve got to find better ways to get me the ball. It should be simple.”

Quinn one of the bright spots in miserable start

“We see the flashes of it and we get excited”

In the Heat’s 104-91 loss to Washington on Thursday night, the problems that have plagued the team all season again appeared. Shaquille O’Neal struggled to provide offense while Dwyane Wade was inconsistent and his night was littered with turnovers. But the old problems were paired with a new standout, point guard Chris Quinn. ‘He was our offensive firepower,’ Wade said. ‘Coming in making big shots for us, Quinny is a very stable point guard, he doesn’t turn the ball over, he runs the offense.’ Quinn, the second-year Notre Dame product, is the playing at the highest level of any player on the stumbling Heat in recent games. In the wake of struggles of high-profile Heat stars, the undrafted Quinn has double-digit point totals in his past three games, and he scored a career-high 22 points in 34 minutes with six 3-pointers on Thursday night.
